The Planet

Ray and I have owned many cars. So has my Mom and Stepdad and Ray's parents. But one car I can recall always being around even through all the car purchasing that seemed to go on in our families was a 1995 Saturn SL1.

I honestly never drove it as I pathetically can't drive stick. But Ray's Mom drove it day in and day out, up and down I-95 between Fredericksburg, VA and Lorton, VA in some of the worst traffic in the nation.

In the end, Ray's brother Sean drove it and affectionately called it "The Planet" (and yes, it did take me a few minutes to figure out the whole Planet name, it being a Saturn and all...). It had over 300,000 miles on it, had the original clutch, rarely had an oil change (they put oil in it when it ran out). It was banged up and beat up, but it still ran. In the end, the engine ceased, mainly due to the fact it had no oil in it. It was sadly put to rest.

So as I have never owned a Saturn, I know what a work horse this Saturn was. And on May 7th, I get to drive a Saturn. Saturn has invited me to Fishkill, NY to drive one of their hybrids to the Orvis Headquarters where I will go fly fishing and clay shooting. And yes, I have questioned them multiple times on why in the HELL they picked me. They assure me they have the right person. But at this point, a free trip, two nights in a really nice hotel? I am totally game...

Wow! Lucky you! I don't know so much about the clay shooting and fly fishing, but the free weekend and driving a car sounds pretty great.

My parents bought me a 1994 Saturn SL2 when I went away to college. It was navy blue and I.LOVED.THIS.CAR!!! It was an awesome car for me and I might even still have it if it had not gotten totalled. Yeah, about a month after graduation, right after my parents signed the title over to me, the car fully paid and everything... some idiot cremed me at a stoplight and freakin' totalled my wonderful Saturn.

Saturns have come a long way since then. I'm sure you'll have a blast on your trip. Have a great time.

AND meeting me! Right? I mean, you want to, don't you? I'll let you drive a Jeep. Or, I can rent a Caddy or a Corvette. Whatever you want :)

How do you keep getting picked for these awesome things?!

Congrats on getting selected! I'm sure you will have a fab time! And really, the whole idea of a 'free' trip by yourself just makes me jealous as hell, but whatever ;)

Everyone I know who has owned a Satrun has loved it - I actually have had my eye on one, but I can't convince the husband.

Have fun driving and clay shooting and flyfishing and damn, TAKE NOTES. I can't wait to hear about it all....

My first car was a Saturn SL1 and we had it for 12 years with no major work. Just maintenance type things. Michael is driving a new Saturn and we LOVE it!! I can't wait to get a BRAND NEW one and not a used one:)

2 nights away! WOOT WOOT! Not a trip to the Mouseland..but hey.

I can also verify that we had a Saturn in our family..that lived to 220,000 miles and only died because it was murdered at a protected left turn when someone hit my sister almost head on.

She wasn't hurt but the beloved Saturn..went to car heaven!

You have to tell us how the hybrid runs!

I am telling you, the Saturn SL1 will last forever. My husband had one when we met. He then sold it to a family member, who is still driving it!! My son is also driving one now!!
